The second Doctor Who spinoff heads to Canada; classic DVDs arriving in Region 1
Canada is the first country outside Britain to sign for the rights to show The Sarah Jane Adventures, the CBBC spinoff of Doctor Who starring Elisabeth Sladen reprising her role as Sarah Jane Smith, investigative journalist. First seen as a companion of the Third Doctor, Elisabeth Sladen turned in her TARDIS key in the late 70s, but returned to reprise the role of Sarah Jane in the new Doctor Who episode "School Reunion." That led to a spinoff series starring Sarah Jane, who has become a Doctor-like figure protecting the Earth with the help of her underaged friends.
BBC Kids Canada will air the six stories of the Sarah Jane Adventures in hour-long blocks on Sundays, starting January 12. (Sarah Jane fans cannot help but hope that this will mean the release of a Region 1 boxset shortly after the Region 2 DVD boxset is released in Britain.)
While waiting for that, Region 1 fans can re-enjoy classic Sarah Jane as the DVDs of Time Warrior (the first Sarah Jane episodes) and Planet of Evil are released on April 1, 2008.
