One of the basic rules of telling a good fantasy story is that all gifts should come with a price. For Sumire, the price of being able to destroy Virus -- essentially, demons -- is a very steep one.
Virus are demons that lurk among us. They were human once, but their souls were stolen and now they seek to steal the souls of others. Only those who can see them are vulnerable. Sumire is one such unlucky person. However, even though they hunt her, she is also capable of destroying them -- when shot with "Antibodies" against the Virus, she becomes a berserker. She is deadly to the Virus, but also dangerous to everyone around her.
Lucia, an eye-patch wearing girl from Venus Vanguard, with a difficult gift of her own, finds her, protects her, and begins to teach her what she needs to know.
She, and her father, also wish to study Sumire to find out why she is able to destroy the Virus -- and, perhaps, to make her normal again.
This is a fun series, overall. The animation is fluid, and the style mostly appealing. There's some humorous moments, and some scary scenes -- in one scene, a Virus chases Sumire in her school, and her terror was palpable.
However, Sumire herself drove me up a wall at times. I have limited tolerance for nervous, spastic anime girls. And she's a classic, in that regard. I found myself looking forward to Sumire-the-berserker as a welcome relief from the spazzing. Lucia was much more tolerable, though I was less than fond of her character design.
Bottom line? I liked it. It's fun, entertaining, and has an interesting premise. It's now on my "to be rented" list.
