Disney has confirmed that plans are underway for a 2009 release of "Toy Story 3," reports Variety. John Lasseter, who directed the first two films in the franchise, will not be directing TS3, but says Lee Unkrich will be sitting in the big chair this time around. Unkrich has previously co-directed "Toy Story 2," "Monsters Inc.," and "Finding Nemo" for The Mouse, but this will be his first solo outing.
In the same interview, Lasseter spoke of plans for future 2D animated features from Disney, something rumored to be grinding to a halt after the disappointing audience responses to "Treasure Planet" and "Atlantis" as compared to their 3D cousins from the same time period. Industry buzz was speculating that the days of 2D were on the decline; however, a surge of poorly-thought-out 3D films in theatres over the past few years may be reversing this trend as audiences are indicating interest in films with actual storylines rather than show-off FX.
