Right from the start, music has been an integral part of
creating the atmosphere on
Supernatural. Everything from Ozzy Osbourne to Bob Dylan has
helped provide just the right note, either as background setting or to underscore an
emotional scene. "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas has practically
become the show's theme song. And no
Supernatural fan can listen to Creedence
Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising" without a shiver.
Show creator Eric Kripke felt that the choice of music for
the show was important enough that he put a note on it in the original pilot
script: "You can take your anemic alternative pop and shove it up your ass.
We're playing Dean's music -- adrenaline pumping metal -- and we're playing it
loud."
In actuality, the songs used in the show are diverse, and
more than just metal. The music of blues
legend Robert Johnson formed the backdrop for a season two hunt, and Frank
Sinatra, The Doors, and Johnny Cash have all been heard. But there is
definitely a flavor of music the show leans towards, and it's one of the many
factors that contribute to setting
Supernatural apart. Most series don't use
Jefferson Airplane and Styx to help set a scene, and not in such memorable
ways. Many songs in the classic rock
landscape have taken on new levels of meaning because of how they were used on the series.
This is a chance to fill in the gaps in your
Supernatural
playlists and at the same time help support the striking writers. They're the ones whose words allow stars
Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki to bring Sam and Dean Winchester to life as they travel the backroads of America fighting wendigos, ghosts,
shapeshifters, and their own inner demons.
