View all articles by Melissa WilsonProduction began yesterday on the next "Star Trek" film, and the first news out of the shoot is that Canadian actor Bruce Geenwood will be playing the first captain of the Enterprise, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Captain Christopher Pike, seen in flashback in the classic Trek episode "The Cage," was the first captain of the most famous starship in SF history. (Well, and then came Archer in that one show I'm blanking on the name of, and am I really the only one who liked Robert April? But whatever. Nothing in this parenthetical should be taken as serious.) As all good Trekkers know, "The Cage" was reworked from "The Menagerie," which would have functioned as the original Trek pilot had NBC not taken issue with it, so in another universe, Jeffrey Hunter is alive and well and on Boston Legal.
Internet rumors have pegged Pike as the captain in-focus for the film, citing Spock as the lead character instead of Kirk. The cast now includes Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban and Eric Bana.
