Transgressive Film in Oscar Run
According to Reuters, the apparently scatalogical, perverse, demented, bloody and outrageous film Taxidermia (2006) will be Hungary’s official entry for consideration for the foreign language Oscar nomination.  In reviewing the film at the time of Cannes in 2006, The Hollywood Reporter compared the movie to early Bunuel, Monty Python, and Brazil—not exactly bad company.  However, the critic Duane Byrge also said cautioned readers to “stay far away” and predicted that “neary… every second” of its running time would deserve an NC-17 rating.

A U.S. release is planned, but no date has yet been announced.

I’m wondering if Eli Roth, who favors both central European locales and fearlessly assaulting audience sensibilties, will consider helming the inevitable English language remake.  Then again, it sounds like the nation of Hungary is solidly behind Taxidermia, so there may not be the PR feud a movie like this would probably require to open big.
