DreamWorks spokescritters have denied rumors that Tim Burton was asked to tone down the gore in "Sweeey Todd."  Variety reports that they were contacted by reps from the company, who said that the Daily Mail speculation amounted to nothing more than "wild rumors" and that the film was always intended to be a solid R.

From Variety's blog site: "As for the violence, the movie is what it is. That's not going to be the issue."

Sondheim fans everywhere breathe a sigh of relief and start sharpening their blades (to be left safely at home of course while they go see the movie at Christmas).
