Another Mel Brooks movie into another Mel Brooks musical. Right on the heels of the "Spaceballs" animated series spinoff announcement, Variety reports that things are looking up for the "Young Frankenstein" adaptation to the stage. Mel Brooks is listed as composer, lyricist and co-book writer along with Thomas Meehan, and Susan Stroman as helmer-choreographer.
The team (and star Roger Bart) are alums from "The Producers," which opened strong to rave reviews but recently closed due to low ticket sales. There's more hope for "Young Frankenstein," say insiders, because while it is also a musical-comedy like its predecessor, the love story is central to the show, and love stories spell longevity on Broadway.
The show is running in Seattle through September 1st, and is coming to New York for an official opening in November. Megan Mullally (Will and Grace) and Andrea Martin co-star.
