A live-action adaptation of the '80s hit Voltron is a go, reports Variety.  Sadly, it sounds like they've never seen the shows.  Justin Marks is writing a script for New Regency in association with 20th Century Fox.  The plot?  "A post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico. Five ragtag survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth's invaders."  That muffled cry in the background is the sound of thousands of Gen Xers weeping into their beer.

Voltron was a weird series.  It came about as a meshed version of two Japanese series, one featuring five giant lion robots, one featuring a lot of cars.
The lion version was later reborn as a CGI series that continued the story, but it never really caught on.  It wasn't set on Earth.  It was set in the far future on a planet called Arus, and despite really lousy animation and nearly nonsensical plots, the show managed to keep storylines going through episodes and made a good attempt at continuity.  Many series from the early and mid '80s are getting makeovers.  The recent "Transformers" film was a smash hit.  "He-Man" and "The Thundercats" are in development, and "G.I. Joe" already has a script floating around.  As someone who spent far too much time in front of the television sucking these shows down when they were on (and learning early that my demographic "didn't count") I'm torn between happy nostalgia and annoyance at yet more unnecessary retoolings of shows that are best viewed through twenty years of memories.
