Moody action 'toon Samurai Jack is coming back from cancellation purgatory and will leap onto the big screen, reports Variety. Fred Seibert (former president of Hanna-Barbera) is partnering with Kevin Kolde (Spumco) and Eric Gardner (Panacea Entertainment) to form Frederator Films, an offshoot of Frederator Studios, which brought us such classics as The Powerpuff Girls and Dexter's Laboratory. "Samurai Jack" will be the first project for the new group.
Gardner said, "Fred is the master at identifying voids in the marketplace and filling them with paradigm-shifting content. There has been a dearth of both 2-D and genre animated feature product, which Frederator Films will be rectifying."
Samurai Jack told the story of a warrior lost in time, fighting the ultimate evil Aku, and starred Phil LaMarr and Mako. The series relied on stylistic art and beautifully-drawn battle scenes to tell the stories, with dialogue only sparsely used. Genndy Tartakovsky ran the series, and is (hooray!) attached to write and direct.
