Offbeat cartoon/television/movie series "The Addams Family" is coming to Broadway in 2009, according to
Variety. The musical will be based on the successful series of comics by creator Charles Addams, featuring Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsly and Uncle Fester. It will not incorporate material from the TV series or the movies, although the show may be using the iconic theme song.
Charles Addams died in 1988; the rights to do the musical were granted by the Tee and Charles Addams Foundation to Chicago-based Elephant Eye Theatrical. Once the show is ready, it will premiere elsewhere (here's hoping Elephant Eye will stay hometown for that) before a launch in the 2009-2010 Broadway season at the Rialto.
This property has great potential," Elephant Eye producer Stuart Oken said. "It's an iconic title. We have both the advantage and the responsibility of having these characters that people all think they know."
