Homer accidentally injures Ned while both are performing at the church’s passion play, and the entire town of Springfield subsequently discovers that Ned and Edna have secretly wed. While Edna tries to settle into her marriage and learn how to ‘normalize’ the innocent and sheltered Todd and Rod, Ned worries that Edna’s influence will corrupt his sons.
Cute and fairly inoffensive, “Ned and Edna’s Blend” makes the mistake of being more of a cozy blanket of a story than a funny romp.It was nice to see Fosse-alike director Chazz Busby, and Ned’s Davy and Goliath-esque nightmare was a hoot – so was the brief appearance by Ned’s aged but still totally hip beatnik parents.
Rod and Tod as parochial school kids makes sense, but I think we've seen them at SE before, if only in a background crowd scene.I thought it was interesting that the boys were just being themselves and it was Edna's worrying versus anyone else's bullying that provided the conflict. And the ultimate realization that if Homer and Marge can raise three kids that, in spite of their troubles, are generally good human beings, therefore Edna and Ned have a decent shot with Rod and Todd was a good twist.
As for the Ned/Edna marriage, I like the idea of it.They have an adult relationship and generally treat each other with respect and intelligence; if she couldn’t marry Skinner and he couldn’t stay with Maude, I’m glad for the ride that this relationship will provide – hopefully a humorous one.
And can I hope against hope that we'll get some juice out of fact that Edna lives RIGHT next door to the Simpsons?Maybe a Bart-and-Homer-team-up-to-take-on-their-foes plot?
In closing, a sweet, simple episode. And the less said about the Homer-poses-as-Jesus plotline, the better.
