Eddie Murphy is set to star in a big-screen adaptation of classic TV cheesefest Fantasy Island, according to the Hollywood Reporter. As has been the actor's schtick in recent films he will be playing several roles in what is being billed as a "family-oriented comedy."  Columbia is making the pic, which is based on the 1978-1984 series starring Ricardo Montalban and not the 1998 Malcolm McDowell version.  That probably means more Tattoo and less creepy undead servants, which could be a good thing in the overall family-friendliness of same, but also means the movie won't be as much fun.
For the record, the moral of every episode of the original series was: "Your life is better the way it is.  Deal."

Murphy is a well-known actor and comedian who can be seen (well, heard) this upcoming weekend in "Shrek the Third."  His early work included a famous stint on Saturday Night Live, followed by breakout movie hits such as "48 Hours" and "Beverly Hills Cop."  His more recent work has been voice work, such as in the "Shrek" franchise, and remakes of Disney classic films like "The Nutty Professor."  He was nominated for an Academy Award this year for his supporting role in "Dreamgirls."
