Ethan Hawke has signed on to star in Lionsgate SF/horror flick "Daybreakers." iF magazine decscribes the movie as a "futuristic vampire film."  Set in 2017, most of the population has been turned into vampires by a plague, and need to carefully store and farm the last of the food (the remaining humans) while they try to find a viable blood substitute.  Meanwhile, a rogue group of vampires and humans attempt to save the future of humanity.  This is, perhaps not coincidentally, the exact same plot of "I Am Legend," an upcoming Will Smith vehicle about -- you guessed it -- one of the last survivors of the human race surrounded on all sides by vampires.  (Salli Richardson also stars in "Legend," a casting choice which just made several people very happy to read.)  The success or failure of "I Am Legend" at the box office will likely decide whether or not "Daybreakers" turns into dust at dawn.  "Legend," which has made waves due to the expense of some of its stunts, is scheduled to open ths December; the earliest "Daybreakers" could feasibly come out would be next year.

If they cast Salli Richardson in "Daybreakers," I'll go see that one, too.
