Celebrity site AfterElton.com has unintentionally started the first Twitter war of 2010.  What was intended to be a fun poll on the gay and bisexual-themed site about who is the gay/bisexual man of the last decade has led to a widespread and good-natured war between fans of John Barrowman and Neil Patrick Harris, announced early on as the frontrunners in the race.  Harris starred as Dr. Horrible in Joss Whedon's web series of the same name, and his fellow Whedonites such as Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day have thrown him their support.  Barrowman, well-known to Doctor Who and Torchwood fans as Captain Jack Harkness, has garnered support from such luminaries as Neil Gaiman and Kevin Smith.  Both actors are keeping their senses of humor firmly in place as they joke about who's on top.
Fans and friends have suggested varying ways of determining the winner in case of a tie, some involving inappropriate uses of food products.  There have also been calls for the pair to work on a project together.

Firefox News admires the work of both actors, both on-screen and in their efforts to increase visibility and acceptance of GBLT people and issues, and so is not endorsing either candidate over the other.  We would however laugh out loud if, even after all the Twittering between the two often overlapping camps, the champion of the #biggaybattle turned out to be George Takei.  The real winners are AfterElton.com for the publicity, and anyone who's pleased as punch that the biggest entertainment news story to begin the new decade* is a campy online poll about which gay actor is the coolest.

The poll ends tonight at midnight.

* For those about to reply that the new decade doesn't begin until 2011, don't bother.  Everyone knows, and no one cares.
