Surgeons don’t use alarm clocks like the rest of us. No, they are roused from their slumbers by the buzzing of their pagers. Another dawn breaks as the Seattle Grace doctors crawl (or in Callie’s case, fall) out of their beds to service their new patients.

A pregnant woman with a head injury is brought in and she’s in labor. The baby is successfully delivered but the child is premature and is hanging on by a limb. The mother is also in bad shape from her head injury and her anxiety about her child isn’t helping her get any better. While Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) works on her cranium Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) strives to raise the newborn’s vitals.

In Operating Room #2 is a whiz kid that did some powerful ‘shrooms and ended up falling off her roof resulting in a lot of broken bones. Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) work on putting “Girly Dumpty” back together again with Dr. Christina Yang (Sandra Oh) and Dr. Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) assisting.

The bulk of this episode centers on Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) and a pediatric patient she’s been working on for a long time. The boy says he’s been at Seattle Grace for seven months but perhaps Arizona met him before that. I don’t know but the fact is that the boy is getting worse and the boy’s father wants Arizona to operate. Arizona strongly feels that the boy would not survive the surgery and that his parents should treasure they time they have now rather than end his life through surgery. When the father offers to donate $25 million dollars to Seattle Grace Chief Weber (James Pickens, Jr) and hospital board member (and lawyer, I think) Larry Jennings (Mitch Pileggi) gently pressure Arizona to obey the rich man’s whims.

Alex doesn’t see the baby getting any better so he unhooks the child from the ventilator and cradles the baby to his chest. Since this could be the baby’s final moments Alex doesn’t want the infant to go without ever being held. When Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) sees Alex performing a “kangaroo hold” on the baby she notes that the baby’s stats are improving and orders Alex to take off his shirt.

Usually when a Grey’s Anatomy doctor is told to take off his or her shirt that indicates a prelude to some erotic shenanigans. In this case, Bailey believes that the baby’s stats will vastly improve if he is held close to another person’s flesh. So, Alex goes shirtless and endures the humorous jabs from passing co-workers to hold the baby close to his pecs.

On their off time Callie, Dr. Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) and Dr. Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) discover that Arizona has a birthday coming. Lexie suggests a surprise birthday party while Mark discourages the idea believing it will result in disaster. Callie wants to be the supportive girlfriend and decides to throw the secret celebration for Arizona.

Arizona succumbs to the wishes of the boy’s father and the hospital higher-ups and performs the boy’s surgery with Chief Webber observing. With the operation a success Arizona heads back home to de-stress.

Remember that girl with the broken bones? Well, during her procedure she had a problem with her heart. Christina was certain she could perform the cardiac procedure but Owen ordered her to wait for the official cardio people to arrive. With the minutes ticking away and the girl’s life ticking along with them Christina defies Owen and opens up the girl’s chest with a little assist from an impressed Jackson. Thanks to her work with former resident “cardio god” Dr. Burke (Isaiah Washington) Christina performed the procedure and restored the girl’s vitals. Though Christina succeeded Owen was still furious with her for jeopardizing the girl’s life, putting her medical license on the line, and disobeying his order in the OR.

Christina went to the temporarily homebound Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) for support but “Happy Married Meredith” agrees with Owen that Christina overstepped her bounds. She also shares that Owen really loves Christina and blew up mostly out of concern for her and her career. Not exactly the advice Christina wanted to hear from her “person” but she considers it as Meredith orders her to get back to work.

Before Callie can tell her girlfriend what happened in surgery Arizona gets upset with her for not answering her pages. Then Owen and Christina arrive and they’re arguing about her rogue heart procedure. After a few bars of synchronized bickering Owen and Arizona leave to go back to the hospital while Callie and Christina refresh themselves.

While at work Christina does a check-up on the broken boned girl and overhears her on the phone talking with a friend about scoring some more drugs. At first, Christina admired the girl because she was a straight “A” student and president of the student body. The girl was an overachiever like her. In this instance, Christina lashes out at the girl for daring to try drugs again after she almost killed herself from that mushroom related roof fall. She tells the girl she was lucky not smart and in a way tells herself the same thing. Arizona is on the couch when Callie comes back to the apartment.

The boy’s body was too weak to survive the surgery afterall. Arizona tries to save the child but it’s no use. Arizona delivers the sad news to Chief Webber and Mr. Jennings and orders them to consult with the parents since they’re lust for the money resulted in the child’s premature death. Arizona opens the door to her apartment to a large crowd yelling surprise at her with Callie in the front row. Instead of a gasp of joyous shock Arizona breaks down into tears and flees back down the hallway. Callie catches up to her and tries to console the weary physician. Arizona takes off while Callie returns to clear up the festivities.

Back upstairs Lexie urges Mark not to tell her “I told you so” but of course he does anyway. A very buzzed Jackson hails Christina for a bold move in the OR and seals his adoration card with a kiss. But Christina pushes away from him declaring that she is involved. This prompts her to return to the hospital to talk with Owen. At first she tries to defend her actions but then surprisingly relents and apologizes for her behavior in the OR. She then asks Owen to return home with her. Amazed by this rare presentation of Dr. Yang’s humility he walks out with her.
As the boy’s parents pack up his belongings Arizona walks in. Mr. Jennings tries to shoo her away but Chief Webber shushes him to allow Arizona to have a talk with the grieving parents. She offers to escort the parents to the morgue so they can say goodbye to their son. The boy’s father promises to fulfill his donation to the “ass kissing hospital board” as his wife and Arizona wish a final blessing of good dreams for the boy.

Dr. Reed Adamson (Nora Zehetner) tries yet again to be a friend for Alex even though he’s repeatedly brushed her off. When Reed offers to take over babysitting duties so he can go home and rest Alex again turns her down. Izzie has disappeared and could possibly be dead. He’s been saddled with her outstanding hospital bills. The one thing he can control at that moment is the well being of that baby and he’s not going to give up on him. So, Reed pulls up a chair and offers to sit with him through the rest of the evening.

The next morning arrives. Alex returns the baby to the recovered mother. It appears mother and child will be okay and Alex might be a natural for pediatrics. Arizona returns home to find Callie asleep on the couch. Callie stirs at the sound of Callie’s keys hitting the table and tries to be encouraging. All Arizona can do is look at Callie half asleep, still wearing a party hat and a silky negligee and confess that she loves her. A deeply touched Callie returns the declaration.

It’s been awhile since the spotlight was on Arizona and pediatrics. I enjoy her magical take on “peds” especially when it results in the eye-rolling and gagging responses from the less perky interns (Hi, Christina). The storyline was also significant in that it showed Chief Webber sinking to another lower level in his character. I could understand Mr. Jennings drooling over that cash but to see Chief Webber twisting Arizona’s arm to perform the surgery even against her better judgment was very sad. Where is Adele Webber when you need her?

And what did I tell y’all? I love being right since it doesn’t happen very often, lol. But for Reed to admit that she finds Alex kind of attractive even when he’s acting like a jerk proves that she is falling for him. I can imagine the tables turning on Izzie making her the slighted wife the same way she betrayed Callie’s marriage to George. Since Izzie is slated to return in Episode 9 Reed will have to put the brakes on that flirtation.

Jackson is gradually becoming a lot bolder and a little more brazen. I like it. I think it was mostly the liquor talking but could Christina have another potential beau in her immediate future? With the rocky patch she’s going through with Owen at the moment Jackson could be the welcome distraction she needs from the therapy sessions and lack of surgeries.

So, yeah, Izzie returns next week. Will she stay or is she just stopping by to collect her things? Will The Chief ever talk to Derek again? And is Meredith ready to finally return to work? We shall see together.
