Because clearly what modern television needs is another vampire-based drama series, HBO has announced initial casting for True Blood, a drama pilot based on the "Southern Vampire" novels by Charlaine Harris, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Stephen Moyer has been cast as Bull Compton, a vampire whose nutritional needs are met by a Japanese blood-substitute.
Opposite Moyer is Anna Paquin as a young psychic waitress named Sookie Stackhouse. Together, they fight crime. (Well, that'll probably come later.) Also cast in the pilot is Brook Kerr, who plays Sookie's spunky coworker. The question is not whether audiences are ready for another vampire love story in the wake of Buffy and Angel; the question is, considering the popularity of Blood Ties and upcoming CBS series Twilight, will there be any ground left to cover?
