Several sources report that ABC has canceled "Life On Mars".
The show was proving itself to be a funky, well-written drama that juxtaposes commentary on current events with a faithful-to-the-genre 1970’s cop-show feel and a well-chosen period soundtrack. However, poor scheduling and lackluster promotion by the network hindered its ability to find and old an audience.
Reports are that the network notified producers today (March 2) that the series will not be renewed for a second season.
The announcement supposedly gives the writers have enough heads up notice to wrap up loose ends, and that the remaining five episodes -- including the series finale -- will actually air.
This is in contrast ABC's previous modus operandi of canceling series and leaving fans without closure or concluding existing story lines.
If reports are accurate, ABC's "Life On Mars" will have a 17-episode run, about the same number of episodes as the BBC version of the series.
BBC's sequel series, "Ashes to Ashes," will air on BBC America beginning Saturday March 7.
“Life On Mars”, which currently airs on ABC on Wednesdays at 10 pm ET., stars Jason O'Mara, Gretchen Mol, Harvey Keitel, Michael Imperioli and Jonathan Murphy. The series follows Detective Sam Tyler, a modern-day NYPD detective who mysteriously finds himself in 1973 following a car accident.
