I have a small quibble with Legend of the Seeker.  Lately it seems that the show that is supposed to be about the seeker’s quest to rid the Midlands of evil has become the show about the seeker, his confessor and the epic love that can never be.  Oh yeah, and the crazy wizard who does the evil thwarting over in the b-plot.

For example, In Episode 5, Listener, Zed tries to infiltrate Darken Rahl’s army.  In episode 9, Puppeteer, he steals the Third Box of Orden before Darken Rahl can get it.  And in episode 11, Confession, he goes home to get a key for a crypt to hide the Third Box of Orden.

Meanwhile, Richard and Kahlan play mom and dad in Listener, Cypher watches Kahlan bathe in episode 6, Elixir, and in episode 7, Identity, Kahlan and not!Seeker Gryff nearly kiss.

The most recent episode, Revenant, is no exception.   In this episode, team seeker bring The Third Box of Orden to the crypt of a famous seeker, Kieren.   But things quickly go awry (and turn steamy) when Cypher and Kahlan become possessed by the spirits of Kieren and his confessor, Viviane.

It seems that Kahlan and Cypher aren’t unique in their relationship.  Instead it seems that all seekers and their confessors have had borderline romantic feelings.  But Kieren and Viviane acted on theirs with disastrous results.

It’s fun to see Seeker tackle a haunted episode.  I’m a big fan of Supernatural, so I like to see how other shows tackle spirit folklore.
And from the moment that the first ghost made an appearance I was wondering if the characters would resort to using salt.  (Since the Romans invented that particular remedy, it could plausibly happen in a quasi-medieval fantasy)  The setting is also fun for Indiana Jones fans:  A haunting in a step-pyramid with sliding walls and door that fall shut from the top.

The plot is interesting in that it explores the nature of the seeker/confessor relationship and actually sets out why acting on the feelings is disastrous.  It’s also intriguing to see how vital the wizard mentor is to the quest of the seeker.  Especially when Zed is contrasted against Amfortas (played by Hercules: The Legendary Journeys star Michael Hurst).  There are also tantalizing hints that the seeker may have magic of his own.

But that still doesn’t make up for the fact that once again Zed is stopping Rahl while the seeker and his confessor are making cow eyes at one another.   I would instead like to see more episodes in which the dynamic is changed up a little bit.  This was handled well in Episode 4, Brennedon.  Here it was the seeker who went off on his own and experienced personal growth while the romance aspect of the show took a backseat.

Unfortunately, it looks like we’re due for more of the Kahlan and Cypher tragic love story show.  By the end of the episode, Zed is once again off on a solo mission to hide the Third Box of Orden.

I just hope that by the end of the season we get to see Cypher take on Darken Rahl for a change, since the show isn't called Legend of the Romance.
