The off-kilter worldview of storyteller and artist Edward Gorey is going to make its big-screen debut in upcoming flick "The Doubtful Guest," according to Reuters. Walden Media (the production company behind "The Chronicles of Narnia") and the Jim Henson Company are going to produce the film, under the direction of Brad Peyton with a script by Matthew Huffman. The story is about a strange and troublesome little creature who moves in to a family's home uninvited and causes all sorts of mayhem.

Said Henson Co. co-CEO Lisa Henson, "It's hard to come up with a creature that you've never seen before in any medium, and he's a unique little creation who is very appealing without being cute or cloying. He's sophisticated yet simple at the same time, but it's not overly juvenile. Adults can find him cute, too."

Gorey's art style was known for the gaunt, bleak-eyed figures, and his morbid sense of humor was legendary, but there have been no previous attempts to bring his work to life. Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "Corpse Bride" show heavy influences from Gorey's work, and may help feed the buzz for "The Doubtful Guest" as it nears completion.
