Big Finish has particularly ambitious plans for their 2009 Doctor Who releases, particularly for the monthly Classic Doctor adventures. This year they are organized into four trilogies, kicking off next week with the Fifth Doctor's "Key 2 Time" series, beginning with "The Judgement of Isskar." As usual, these stories are available for inexpensive download or as CDs including cast photographs and extra interviews.
Subscribers to this range get two other extras this year as well. Starting in April, CDs will include a 10-minute installment of the Three Companions story, teaming Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart (TV companion to the Second though Fifth Doctors), Polly Wright (TV companion to the First and Second Doctors), and Thomas Brewster (audio companion to the Fifth Doctor). This mini-series will run for 12 installments, ending in 2010.
In December, subscribers get the bonus release of An Earthly Child, an hour-long story in which the Doctor's granddaughter, Susan, meets his Eighth incarnation. Starring Carole Ann Ford and Paul McGann, it includes Paul's real-life son, Jake, who will be playing the Doctor's great-grandson.
The latest Eighth Doctor and Lucie audio season begins in March. In a return to the cliffhanging days of the original show, subscribers can download a single half-hour episode every Saturday. Eight CDs compiling the two-part adventures will follow.
For those who'd like to sample before they buy, free adventures can be found on the Big Finish podcast, available from the website and British and American iTunes. In addition to UNIT: The Coop, there is a podcast of Nick Briggs reading his Second Doctor short story One Small Step. The latest podcast samples many of the 2009 stories.
In Who-related news, BAFTA nominee Noel Clarke will appear in Big Finish's Stargate range in May's release, Stargate SG-1: First Prime by James Swallow.
