Bandai Entertainment and NCM Fathom have announced that they are bringing the English-dubbed Sword of the Stranger anime straight from Japan to theaters in the United States, for one night only, Thursday February 5, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. local times.
This film, produced by studio BONES (who previously did Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Soul Eater), was recently submitted to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (i.e. the academy that awards the Oscars), to be considered for the category of Best Animated Feature of 2008. So clearly this showing promises to be an exciting theater experience.
The anime portrays the story of the young boy, Kotaro, along with his dog Tobimaru, who encounter a nameless samurai who has vowed never to draw his sword again due to terrible, haunting memories from his past. Kotaro is hunted by the Mings from China, among whom is a Western swordsman with a Chinese name, Luo-Lang, who is seeking a worthy rival. In a clash between these people, a feudal lord, and a group of monks whose faith is in jeopardy, the bond between Kotaro and the nameless samurai is tested.
Robert Napton, the marketing director for Bandai Entertainment, is eloquent in his enthusiasm for this film, which "has some of the most stunning action choreography ever seen in anime film." He adds, "Anime and samurai fans won't want to miss this visually amazing and emotionally compelling event at their local movie theater, where this film was meant to be seen."
Along with the film itself, there will be an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at its creation by studio BONES. Included will be interviews with the English voice actors, as well as with director Masahiro Ando and producer Mashiko Minami.
The list of theaters at which the film will be shown is impressive. Information about ticket prices and theaters near your location can be found at the NCM Fathom site. Be sure to check there periodically between now and the big day, because theater locations may occasionally change.
Bandai has also launched several other online sites where people can acquire information and keep up with the news. They have created an official Sword of the Stranger website, but fans can also interact at MySpace and Facebook. Get your tickets early, and have fun at the movie!
