Well, FMA fans, we now have a time frame. April is one of the two biggest months for anime releases in Japan (the other is October), so April of 2009 it is, for the new Fullmetal Alchemist series to start its TV run in that country.
When will it appear in North America? There's been no announcement on that schedule yet. The assumption among fans, at least, tends to be that FUNimation will pick up this version of the series, as it did the first one, but no one can say anything for sure at the moment.
The official website for the new series has now launched (in Japanese), and features a "teaser trailer" to get your enthusiasm roused. The site also indicates that more news is coming on December 12, in the January issue of Square Enix's Shonen Gangan magazine (again, the site is in Japanese). Hiromu Arakawa's serialization of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga that started everything is still going on in that publication, and gradually nearing a conclusion.
According to the Anime News Network, the trailer from the website ran at the end of the Mobile Suit Gundam 00 season two episode last Sunday in Japan, with the voiceover saying, "New training...a fullmetal artificial limb, a body of armor...the brothers' journey begins. Fullmetal Alchemist: April 2009 Training.
In this palm, is there hope or despair?"
And while the trailer doesn't give much direct information, it does at least hint at one or two possible answers to fans' questions that have been voiced ever since the new series was announced. The brief glimpse of the artwork suggests a style closer to the manga style than to that of the original anime. This could mean nothing more, though, than simply that there are different animators involved in this production. There's still not enough information there to indicate whether the series will somehow follow the first anime and movie, or will go back and tell the manga story instead. (The two diverge considerably after the episodes involving the Greed character.)
There are three other hints, though, that may be significant. The first is that the character of Alphonse is shown in his armored body instead of the human body recovered at the end of the first anime. And the character of Roy Mustang does not look as he did at the end of the anime and in the movie. These two things could hint that we'll be going back to the manga story, or they could indicate merely the background of the anime story, which would then be further developed in the second anime. We just can't say yet.
However, the voiceover itself, quoted in the ANN post, may give the strongest hint: "the brothers' journey begins." (Italics mine) Combine that with Alphonse's armor, and it may indeed be telling us that we're going to see a story that goes back to the beginning, therefore likely closer to the manga than to the first anime.
The Fullmetal Alchemist story still intrigues thousands and thousands of fans all over the world. Now the information being gradually (tantalizingly!) revealed about the new series is kindling fresh enthusiasm, as FMA fans speculate about and anticipate the next stage of this marvelous adventure we're all on.

YESSSSS!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, I did question more about that... about Al in an Armor, and Ed still had his childish disposition, sort of. I hope this goes FAITHFULLY as the manga goes. But a continuation of the old one would be fine too. I mean, it wasn't much of a bad idea... just that... it has nothing to do with Hiromu Arakawa anymore. *sends cows flying everywhere* I am so psyched!

One thing that a hopeless n00b to serialization like me is wondering.... More information will be provided IN the Gangan's JANUARY issue... at the 12th of DECEMBER? Huh? =_=" The situation is foggy enough as it is. Well, assuming that the answer is YES JANUARY ISSUES ARE PUBLISHED A MONTH EARLY, it seems that something must have been revealed already, seeing that the New Year is dawning as I write this. What was announced December 12...?

I think it would be better for it to be a continuation because in the movie they set it up for another episode or something.
If it was just the same story again then it'll just be repetitive...
Either way would be fine though.. I just finished the movie last night and now there's an empty void because it seems like there's more to it :'(

No way not a second movie... at least yet... I agree with comment #6, I really do hope its a continuation. Since the movie I think they had a pretty solid close, but as creative as the writers are Im sure they can come up with another incredible and amazing story. Plus yeah, Im not really interested in going back down the story, it would be repetitive, and I wouldnt want to watch just another angle of the original manga that wasnt shwon in the anime. I wish for a continuation :D
(Personally I also wish they would be able to go back and stay in the world with alchemy by the end of the second FMA and that they at last explain the romance between Ed and any of the other girls)

No ppl this is NOT a continuation the article already stated that the AD spots clearly hint that this is more of a redo from the manga standpoint this time so we are gona get the manga version this time around so allot is gona be different throught the anime.

in response to post #9, the manga is WAY different from the anime, once it reached episode 25 of the anime, the manga does a 180 and goes in a whole different direction. If no one has read the manga and is worried about repetativeness, you need not worry, trust me. This is gonna be an awesome new series that people are really gonna love.

i reeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaalllllly hope it follows the manga this time! i mean the anime was awesome but it had some gapingly large loopholes and the manga is really amazing. *dances* also in the preview it looked like there was a scene from the manga. woooooooooo i can't wait! i'll watch it in japanese if i have to (even though i sadly don't know the language)

Yeeeeeeeah its so exciting because i love full metal alchemist it one of my favorite anime. I watch it over and over again and dont get bored i hope they put the second season of full metal because it rocks. It would be cool if they stick with the same story where the movie ended but some how the managed to get out into their own world .They wouldn't have to make a circle and it would be more interesting and exciting. The should stick to the end and make a new advanture with the same story from the first season and make a new advanture for all and edd it would be cool. I love Full metal.

well i think its impossible to continue from where the movie left off because they made the decision not to open the gate again and without the central idea of alchemy not really anywhere they can go with it so im assuming its going to follow the storyline of the manga
