As the team investigates, they discover that the security camera has been jammed, the getaway vehicle -- and the money -- has been torched, and that the motive may have been a hit, not a robbery. The team searches for crimes with similar modis operandi, which leads to a six-month-old jewelry store robbery that netted $4 million in diamonds while the security cameras were disabled.
Meanwhile, the team mentors a rookie agent, Dwayne Wilson, whether or not Gibbs wants to. Wilson sweats the small stuff, but offers solid insights into the case. Director Vance asks Gibbs to evaluate the rookie’s performance. Gibbs reluctantly agrees, then asks Ducky for a psychological profile. What Gibbs gets is Ducky’s profile – of Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Meanwhile, Gibbs dwells on the death his last rookie, NCIS Special Agent Brent Langer, who was killed in the season opener and marked as a traitor.
Abby finds the link between the bank robbery / hit and the diamond heist, and the game is on.
The mysterious Agent Lee makes an appearance in this episode, exuding an air of unease as she walks through the office and throughout her meeting with Director Vance. Gibbs makes note of her unease, and the wheels start turning….
This episode was well-plotted and fairly intricate.
This episode returns to the traitor-in-our-midst story arc that began in this season’s premiere episode. Sure, it’s been several episodes since we went there, but the flashback reminder sequence was a bit heavy handed.
Harmon’s portrayal of Gibbs, which is often so subtle that it seems emotionless, overcame that limitation in this episode. The final few minutes reveal that Gibbs knows more about the death of Agent Langer than he has shared with anyone else. We can assume that all he is waiting for is proof.
“NCIS”, now in its 6th season, is the hottest show on television. New episodes are on CBS on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET. Classic episodes air nightly on the USA Network and on Monday and Tuesday nights on ION TV.
“NCIS” follows a team of special agents for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. The highly rated show features an ensemble cast of Mark Harmon, David McCallum, Michael Weatherly, Cote De Pablo, Sean Murray, and Pauley Perrette.
(Tony's movie references in this episode include “Dirty Harry” and “Keystone Kops”. Did I miss any? Feel free to let me know in the comments. — A.S.)
