The FCC has approved the 'white spaces' -- a disputed part of the radio spectrum -- for use by American consumers.
The portion of the spectrum in question will have a longer range than current Wi-Fi options and may be used for such things as wireless video transmission from a computer or DVR inside homes, and internet access at a much greater distance from a transmitter than current options allow.

There are concerns that this may cause some interference with commercial broadcasts, but the FCC has indicated that devices using the newly approved airwaves will be tightly regulated to mitigate any problems.
