A love triangle turns deadly for a businessman. The question is: where are the diamonds?

Episode 1:4
The episode opens with the scene of a torture/murder and a missing body.  Jane lets everyone know that he thinks the victim is still in the house and quickly finds a hidden safe-room.  After a bit of song and dance and the humming of a jaunty sea tune, Jane opens the room with the digits on a sailboat pictured above the safe.  Inside they find the body of the murdered man, just as Jane predicted.

Later, at the funeral, Jane enters into a bet with Cho and Rigsby that he can seduce any woman present.  They obviously pick the grieving widow, and he accepts without flinching.  He notes that she seems afraid of her lawyer for some reason and Jane suspects he knows something about the murder.

She seems a little put off by his advances at first, but he seems to connect with her a bit.  When Lisbon finds out she is furious and demands that Jane appologize to the widow at her home (which was specifically what the widow requested).  Jane runs into the widow's daughter first.  She is a bit too young to be totally shocked by the death, but she and Jane play at "trolls" until her mother shows up.  In a brief conversation, the widow asks Jane if her husband had some extra money hidden away somewhere.

The CBI team finds some secret financial information and tracks down a boat the murdered husband owned.  The boat is completely trashed, as though someone had searched it.  While exploring it, Jane wonders off and runs right into the barrel of the husband's former mistress.  She claims she was his fiance, which really surprises everyone.

They question her back at the station and she tells them he was leaving his wife for her and that they were planning to take the child away too.  She tells them she was looking for the husband's hidden diamonds.  After some coaxing she gives them two names that might lead to more answers.  Both the named men have shady records so they decide to go after them.

Jane goes to talk to the widow again.  After a bit, he asks her what instrument played the wolf.  This seems to be a simple way to break the tension.  He then tells her about the mistress and her husband's plans.  She doesn't take it well and she asks Jane to hold her.  He refuses because he sees where things are going.

The team goes to Oakland and finds the two men coming out of their house.  One man surrenders but the other runs for it and Rigsby has to chase him until he drags him down off of a chain-link fence.  They grill both men, but they have the same story and don't seem to be related to the case.

All of a sudden, the daughter is kidnapped and the mother finds a note demanding the diamonds in return for the child's safety.  Jane meets with the kidnapper, only to find that it's the mistress from before and she isn't the kidnapper at all.  She's just a "middleman" (so to speak) and that she is only doing it to protect the child.

She has a gun and threatens to shoot Jane if he doesn't hand over the diamonds (which he pretends that he has).  In the act of handing her the diamonds, he fools her into handing over her gun and her phone.  He does this with something that looks like what pick-pockets do (a common companion to mentalism).  He calls the phone and has the team do a trace on it.  They determine that it's the lawyer's house and upon rushing the door, shots are fired.

After the obnoxious cliff-hanger, the scene reopens back at the hospital.  The two women, the wife and the mistress, are both in the lobby as they are told that the little girl is alright.  Jane plays a trick on them by having them fed false information about the diamonds  After this the mistress goes directly to the little girl, but the wife is no where to be found.

Jane follows her to the only logical place for her to go...the place where he suspects the diamonds to be found.  She tells Jane that she was actually the one torturing her husband, in collaboration with her lawyer.  He wouldn't give up the diamonds though and escaped into the safe-room before they could kill him directly.

Jane reaches up and finds the diamonds in a chandelier that the husband had made for his daughter.  Case closed.

At the very end of the episode, Jane gives Rigsby the advice to tell Van Pelt how he really fills about her.  Rigsby falters once again, though.

Overall, this was a pretty interesting episode with lots of twists and turns.  The mistress was extremely surprising to me and I thought it was a pretty awesome move.  The show has migrated away from the Red John arc a bit, but this episode was worth it.
