Okay, it's not the famous Cannes Film Festival, but VIZ has still been in Cannes, France, all this week, with a booth at the MIPCOM 2008 show.
MIPCOM is essentially a trade show for international entertainment content, the main event for distributors and buyers to come together, network, assess future trends, arrange co-productions, and make deals that will set the entertainment agenda all over the world.
VIZ Media Europe (VME) is the Paris-based subsidiary of the San Francisco parent company, VIZ Media LLC. The VME subsidiary aims particularly at Europe, in developing, marketing, and distributing a certain subset of the parent's Japanese manga and animation in the European market.
All week, the company has been showcasing several animated properties for teens and young adults, in the hope of marketing them in parts of the world where they haven't been seen so far. Several of these are already familiar and well-loved in the North American market, such as Bleach and Death Note. Another series, which it seems VIZ is pushing very hard in all sorts of markets right now, is the 51-episode Blue Dragon.
For a complete list of shows that VIZ Media Europe has been marketing all week at MIPCOM, check out the company's press release. We probably won't see the end result of all this trade activity for a year or two, since it takes that long to bring the decisions and deals to fruition. But obviously, Japanese manga and anime, which have done so well crossing the cultural barrier into North America, continue their spread into the rest of the world.
