Announcements over the last couple days show that there will be plenty of old and new Who to see the fans through the gap year caused by the 5-episode Torchwood miniseries and the handful of Doctor Who specials.

The second season of the Sarah Jane Adventures has started airing in Britain on the same staggered schedule as the first season, with people watching via pay channels getting an episode a week ahead of the regular, free CBBC broadcast. Depending on how you're watching, the show is either about to complete its second two-part story or start its third. There will be five stories overall this season, and there is already discussion of the next one, although nothing official has been announced. Region 1 fans of Sarah Jane can content themselves with the recent release of the SJA S1 boxset and the knowledge that the Sci Fi Channel intends to air S2 at some unannounced date in the near future.

As the BBC gives a classic companion brand new adventures, Big Finish has ambitious plans to continue expanding their range of classic Doctor and companion adventures. Their license has been renewed through 2010.
In 2009, they are going to do something new for the Doctors; rather than releasing random solo adventures, the monthly releases will be a trilogy for each Doctor (Peter Davison through Paul McGann). In addition, the monthly Companion Chronicles have announced titles through next May.  Related spinoffs planned include a second series of Iris Wildthyme adventures as voiced by Katy Manning.

For those who would like a try-before-you-buy option, Big Finish has inexpensive downloads of the first episodes of many of their Whovian titles. A short U.N.I.T. adventure can be downloaded for free from the podcast page, and BB7 will be airing part of their second series of Eighth Doctor and Lucie adventures on October 19.

For New Who fans, the second audio-only adventure, "The Forever Trap" as read by Catherine Tate, has just been released, along with three new Torchwood books. The three December 2008 Doctor Who books are available for preorder, and details are starting to trickle out for the Who and Torchwood tie-in books that will be available next spring.

There may not be as much Doctor Who or Torchwood that we'd like to see on screen in 2009, but there's going to be plenty of it in our libraries and on our CD players!
