Director Michael Bay and writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are going to bring 2012: The War for Souls by Whitley Strieber to the big screen, says the Holywood Reporter. This is the same team that is bringing the "Transformers" movie to life this July. The new project is for Warner Bros.

2012 is a story about parallel Earths, and how all of them face the apocalypse predicted by the ancient Mayan calendar. An academic researcher must team up with his alternate self in order to stop the disaster at all costs. (DC Comics has not been reached for comments, although since they're part of Time Warner AOL, they might not care.)

"The idea of a man teaming up with himself to solve a cosmic mystery was way too good for us to pass up," said Kurtzman.

Strieber's novels have been made for Hollywood before this, most notably "The Day After Tomorrow." His other novels "The Grays" and "The Hunger" are currently in development as well.
