2x2, which broadcasts The Simpsons in Russia announced on September 19th, 2008 that it will remove the show from its airwaves on the twenty-second due to pressure from the national government and religious groups.
The show is among only twelve shows deemed unsuitable for national consumption by the government. 2x2 will take their case to the Russian legal system in the hope of getting the ruling overturned. If they're unsuccessful, it's a distinct possibility that the shows will never be seen in Russia again.
Other shows banned from the Russian airwaves include South Park, Drawn Together and Family Guy. Prosecutors for the defense describe the shows as “promot(ing) violence and cruelty, pornography, anti-social behavior, abound(ing) with scenes of mayhem, the infliction of physical and ethical suffering, and are aimed at invoking fear, panic and terror in children.”
2x2, meanwhile, has taken their campaign to the people, gathering signatures and holding demonstrations. A concert was also held in St. Petersburg on September 22nd, 2008 for the cause.
