...more like Crush and Burn.
Well, I wasn't really wild about any aspect of "Crush Landing" at all. Where the hell was Calvin? Why was Evan in a total of five minutes of the entire episode? Would Ashleigh and Casey ever fight over a guy? Was that really supposed to be Cappie? And since when did Rusty have doubts about his chosen major? Many of the conflicts at the forefront of the episode seemed contrived, pushing the semi-interesting plot developments into the background. All in all, a very jumbled episode of Greek.
Don't get me wrong, there were moments. Cappie and Rebecca's interaction at the beginning of the episode made me laugh (“Help me Toby Kwon, you’re my only hope!”) and any time Cappie wants to make a sex tape, he can feel free to mail it directly to me. It's just that the end when Rebecca reveals her parents are getting a divorce and Cappie just cracks jokes? That is not the Cappie I'm familiar with. This is the guy who left Casey at Spring Break to go be with Rebecca when she needed him. The guy who, just last week, apologized to Rusty for being obsessed with his feud with Evan, and made the conscious decision to move on. He's already proven he's more than capable of being understanding, sympathetic, and mature beneath his exterior of all fun, all the time. It felt really off to have that moment towards the end with Rebecca.
In other weird character development, what was with Rusty's sudden disillusion with polymer science? I can understand if they made that an ongoing arc, but the conflict, journey, resolution in one episode was, as I said before, completely contrived and irritating. I can't decide if I'm going to like this new guy (Max the RA) just because I was so disenchanted by Rusty's conflict, but I'm willing to see if I like him in future episodes (his opening monologue was pretty funny and trying to give Rusty the suicide hotline number made me chuckle). I will say that Dale, at least, was hilarious as ever and he and Rusty make for excellent BFF/roommates. Here's hoping that when the endless freshman year finally ends, they find a cool way to keep Dale tied to the story.
I was totally turned off by Ashleigh and Casey fighting over some dude, hotness monster or not, and their little resolution/apologies at the end didn't do much to offset how out of character if felt to me. Not to mention that I pretty much felt like Casey was being a giant hypocrite with Frannie at the end. Lesson #347, saying you were being hypocritical does not negate the hypocrisy or allow you to continue being a hypocrite without looking like a jerk. Casey clearly missed that day in class.
Also, I really, really want to like the Unholy Alliance, but Evan has absolutely got to stop being so snide about Casey and a little more supportive and respectful of Frannie's concerns and wants. He doesn't seem to care one way or the other how anyone feels except for himself. I miss Evan being at least a little cool, but now he's on screen for a total of five minutes and the whole time he's acting like a tool. I do not approve of this nonsense!
Seriously, the only high points for me this episode were Dale's TMI and Rusty and Heath playing Kappa Tau Tower. (Don't worry Heath, sometimes I hate bras, too.) I guess the things I value the most in Greek just weren't really prominent this episode. The show didn't bother to tie together anything that was happening, even the crush party felt disjointed and stretched out, so that there wasn't really a climax at all. I don't like being left on the edge.
Oh hey, by the way, anyone else catch that Cappie likes his boxers how I like my socks? Folded, not rolled. At any rate, I think I’m still processing this episode. (And if I never hear that phrase again, I’ll be the happiest reviewer this side of the internet.)
