You won't be hearing Heart's anthem "Barracuda" again anytime soon (at least not accompanying the Republican candidates). Ann and Nancy Wilson, better known as the sister act Heart, sent a cease-and-desist letter to the McCain campaign over unauthorized use of their rock anthem "Barracuda." The song had been used to promote McCain's running mate, who also compares herself to a lipsticked canine. (How either animal relates to turning around the recession, fixing the mortgage crisis, or returning American soldiers safely from Iraq is anyone's guess.) The singing duo says permission was never asked for use of the song, and that they would not have granted it anyway. Sony BMG and Universal Music Publishing were also left out of the permission loop.
"Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women," said the Wilsons. "We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. [The song] was written in the late '70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women...There's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there.

These rock star divas need to wake up and smell the coffee. Most of their fanbase has grown up in the past 30 years. It's about time the artists themselves do the same. It's sorta hypocritical of them to continue to rail against the unfairness of the record industry, given the fact that those companies afforded THEM the luxury of living lives of leisure far beyond their brief flash-in-the-pan careers.

Heart's not where it stops. AC/DC which I thought the GOP wanted to ban for being the devils's music was sung - and danced to at the RNC? Is nothing sacred?

In spite of Heart's request that McCain stop using "Barracuda", McCain is still playing it at campaign events as of September 9, according to CNN's Political Ticker. I think McCain's disregard for musicians' property rights is one clue as to how he'd govern -- just like George W. Bush.
