Did you fall in love with
Pushing Daisies
because it was so wonderfully strange, so delightfully weird, and so
fascinated with pies? If you answered "But of course!" you may not be
too happy with what ABC has been up to...
According to an article posted on
Digital Spy, Pushing Daisies
series creator Bryan Fuller reveals to a nervous fanbase that home
network ABC has been trying to 'ground' the show. By 'grounding', one
can infer this means removing anything from
Daisies that makes it so wonderful in the first place.
The
article goes on to say that ABC had fears that if the show were too
weird, it would not find an audience--which discounts the rather loyal
audience
Pushing Daisies currently
has. Fuller defended his decision to stay true to the show by not
alienating that loyal (and patient!) audience by insuring the
'fundamental DNA' of the show didn't change. Whether or not Fuller is
successful remains to be seen, since whenever Creativity takes on
Bureaucracy, the wise money is always on the suits. Just ask Joss
Whedon.
It's not difficult to imagine the baffled expressions of network executives when faced with any episode of
Pushing Daisies.
With its originality, quirkiness, and underlying assumption that its
audience can both read and think for themselves, it's no wonder ABC
wants to change it. I mean, who exactly would watch something like
that?
Weirdos,
that's who. And as Joss Whedon can also tell you, nothing mobilizes a
fanbase more than weirdos who feel they're going to lose something that
makes them feel less so.
It looks like
Pushing Daisies Season 2 has suddenly become a lot more interesting, even if that's the last thing ABC wants.
