First live-action film comes to Canada, second comes to the U.S.
Canadian fans of the
Death Note anime and manga series got some very good news last Friday, learning that the first live-action feature film based on that story will at last be shown in Canada.
Viz Pictures, affiliated with
Viz Media, presented this film in American theaters last year to great success, and now will follow up with Canadian screenings.
On Monday, September 15, 2008, the live-action
Death Note will run in 60 Cineplex Entertainment and Empire Theatres locations across Canada, at 9:00 p.m. local time. Fans can check out the
Cineplex or
Empire websites to learn which theatres are participating, and how to get tickets.
There will also be a special DVD advance ticket bundle, going on sale on Friday, August 29, which will include both the DVD of the film and a ticket to a showing, at a suggested retail price of Cdn $29.99. However, the DVD can also be purchased on its own at theatres, after the screenings.
In addition to the film itself, the evening will highlight a 20-minute feature describing how the manga was translated into live action, and containing an interview with the film's director, Shusuke Kaneko.
We've been waiting a long time for this in Canada, and fans all over the country are really looking forward to a great evening.
Meanwhile, mere days after announcing the Canadian screenings, Viz Pictures then revealed plans for an American showing of
Death Note II: The Last Name. As they did for the first film, they will screen the second one in partnership with
NCM FATHOM, the entertainment division of
National CineMedia, during a special two-night event, October 14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m. local time, in about 400 theaters across the United States. That's almost 100 more theaters than last time, the additional locations added entirely because of the enthusiastic fan response for the first movie last year.
Advance online ticket purchases open on Friday, August 29, exclusively for
SHONEN JUMP Newsletter subscribers. Afterward, tickets become available to the general public on September 5. So fans who want seats right away are urged to
sign up for the newsletter before the 29th. For all theater and ticket information, visit the
Fathom Events site.
There will be extras at this event, as there are for the Canadian screenings. Fans will be treated to an interview with Shusuke Kaneko, get a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the movie, and see a profile of the cast members.
So that month - September 15 to October 15 - is going to be an excellent month for
Death Note fans all over North America. And Canadians no doubt can look forward to the second movie coming north as well, in the not-too-distant future.
