GDH/Gonzo is expanding into Singapore, through the creation of a new business alliance with E2Max Centre Pte Ltd.
E2Max is a subsidiary of Cathay Organisation Holdings Ltd, which began in 1935 as a movie entertainment pioneer, and has expanded since then into many enterprises including hotels, property management, and retail, while remaining deeply involved in the entertainment industry. The organization now runs cinemas as well, but is seeking broader ways to "synergize" entertainment, leisure, and lifestyle.
E2Max provides the perfect opportunity for its parent organization to do this, since this subsidiary specializes in cyber-games. According to GDH's press release announcing the alliance, the government of Singapore plans to turn that state into an online games hub for all of Southeast Asia, so GDH/Gonzo is really getting in on the ground floor by creating this partnership with E2Max.
In one of its internet cafes, E2Max @ Cine-L9, E2Max has established (as of August 15, 2008) private chambers called Anime Chambers, which will contain as many as five people, where registered members can play online games (free with membership) on 42-inch monitor screens. The games are published by GONZO Rosso Malaysia. In addition, members can view anime series with English subtitles, produced by Gonzo, GDH's main production subsidiary. Gonzo will also collect content produced by external studios, and include that in the materials provided for the Anime Chambers.
Users can purchase prepaid cards (called MYROSSO), in order to acquire in-game items, and anime-related merchandise will be available as well.
If Singapore accomplishes its goal - to make itself the hub of online gaming for all of Southeast Asia - this alliance between GDH/Gonzo and E2Max may go a long way toward providing a fairly quick cash infusion to alleviate the financial woes that GDH has experienced in the past year.
