Legendary actress Mary Tyler Moore will be joining the cast of Lipstick Jungle as
the mother of Brooke Shield's character Wendy Healy. Moore, whose
impeccable comedic timing has been a gold standard of sitcom acting for
decades, will be in the September 24th, 2008 premier of Lipstick
Jungle's second season.
The series is based on a best selling book by Candace Bushnell (who
also created Sex in the City and follows the lives of three friends:
a movie exec, Wendy (Brooke Shields); and an editor-in-chief of a
fashion magazine, Nico (Kim Raver of 24); and a fashion designer,
Victory (Lindsay Price of Beverly Hills, 90210.)
Moore got her start in acting in 1954 as Happy Hotpoint in commercials for appliances which aired during Ozzie and Harriet. She
then had parts in multiple movies but her breakout role was in 1961 as
Laura Petrie, Dick Van Dyke's character's wife on the Dick Van Dyke Show.
For this part she won an Emmy in 1964 -- and, through tears, she said
at the awards ceremony, "This will never happen again!" She won again
in 1966 for Dick Van Dyke show, and in 1973, 1974 and 1976 for The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and in 1993 for her role as supporting acress in Stolen Babies. She's also won a couple of Golden Globes and has had an Oscar nomination.
Between 1970 and 1977 she played Mary Richards on the The Mary Tyler Moore Show,
with Ed Asner as her gruff boss Lou Grant. And over the years, she's
appeared in scores of other roles on sitcoms, movies, variety shows and
dramas.
