Given Hollywood's obsession over the last few years with superheroes,
I'm not at all surprised to learn that Hercules will be made into a
movie. Hercules is, after all, the ancient-history version of a
superhero. And -- witness the lasting popularity of the series staring Kevin Sorbo and the Disney film -- he's still a crowd pleaser today.
Plus, well, ancient Greece is all sorts of popular right now. Hercules
isn't a Spartan but hey! he still kicks butt and bonus! they can cast a
hot guy in a skimpy costume.
In short: It was inevitable.
This particular incarnation probably won't feature Sorbo in leather pants. (Damn.) It remains to be seen if they'll keep the leather pants look, or go for an oiled-up half nekkid body builder with abbreviated armor.
It will, however, be produced and directed by Peter Berg of this year's Hancock fame, and will be co-produced by co-production of Spyglass Entertainment, Berg’s film 44 and Radical Pictures. The script, written by Ryan Condol, will be based on the five part comic book by Steve Moore and Radical Publishing called Hercules: The Thracian Wars.
