Afro Samurai: Resurrection, a sequel to the original five-episode series, Afro Samurai, is getting quadruple play in the news today.
The earlier series from GDH K.K., which first aired on Spike TV in January of 2007, was based on the Afro Samurai manga by Takashi Okazaki, and was so wildly popular that it was a top-selling DVD release later in the year.
Now Spike TV has announced that it will run the two-hour television movie sequel to the original series on its network in January of 2009. Actor Samuel L. Jackson, star of the series, will reprise his role as the title character in the movie. He will now be joined by Lucy Liu (Charlie's Angels, Kill Bill), who will portray Sio, Afro's seductive enemy, and by Mark Hamill (Star Wars), as Sio's servant and guard. Hip-hop artist The RZA, who did the music for both Kill Bill movies as well as the soundtrack for the Afro Samurai series, will return to create the score for Resurrection. Also reprising his role from the series, that of Kuma, the teddy bear-headed warrior, will be Yuri Lowenthal (Sasuke from Naruto).
The movie is produced by GONZO, GDH's main production subsidiary, in partnership with GDH and FUNimation Entertainment. And in fact, FUNimation released its own announcement today as well, that it is to be the master licensing agent for toy, merchandising, and home video rights for the movie. It will release the DVD early in 2009, sometime after the broadcast on Spike TV.
The third announcement came from GDH K.K. itself, as it revealed that it plans an exclusive trailer premiere today, at this weekend's Comic-Con International 2008, in San Diego, California. After the trailer unveiling at 4:15 p.m. PT at the convention, Spike.com and Afrosamurai.com will air a sneak peek at 8:15 p.m. ET (5:15 p.m. PT).
But there's even more. Namco Bandai Games America, which plans to release the Afro Samurai game for Microsoft XBox 260 sometime in 2009, will allow attendees of Comic-Con International to play a demo of the game during the convention.
Obviously, Afro Samurai: Resurrection is so big, it takes half the industry to present it properly.
