On its video update for Monday, July 21, FUNimation announced that it has acquired the rights to Aniplex's 13-episode series, Baccano! which is an adaptation of a novel by Ryohgo Narita.
The show has a pulp fiction feel, being set in the United States of the 1930s, where the "speakeasies" run by the mafia serve as meeting places for immortal alchemists, thieves, and killers.
Fans can get a preview of the series by watching the first episode for free on FUNimation's official Baccano! website. Just type in the password - Flying Pussyfoot - and you're in. (That happens to be the name of the train featured in the series. The FUNimation podcast tantalizingly left it up to fans to find out what the name was, but fortunately the Anime News Network filled us in.
)
In other Monday news, FUNimation also posted the entire 11-episode science fiction adventure series, Jyu Oh Sei (Planet of the Beast King) as a set of download-to-own videos. The show features twin brothers, Thor and Rai, who are abandoned on an alien planet after witnessing the suspicious deaths of their parents.
The series, whose acquisition was previously announced at Anime Expo 2007, is available with English subtitles, each episode to cost US $1.99. Apparently the downloads work best for computers running Windows XP or higher.
Tokyopop had also announced at Anime Expo 2007 that it had acquired the original Jyu Oh Sei manga. To correspond as closely as possible with the posting of the anime, the company has plans to release the first volume of the manga at the beginning of August. Meanwhile, FUNimation still has not announced any plans for a DVD release of the series.
Just another day in the busy life of FUNimation.
