Nea has been a fan of Doctor Who since before the era of VCRs and personal computers. Now she's thrilled that there's an all-new show and all-new ways for fandom to keep up to date and spread.

TV Guide has announced today that it went directly to Cardiff to get confirmation of the third season of Torchwood. While scripts have been confirmed, apparently Torchwood will not have the usual 13-episode run. Instead, a single five-episode story arc will be presented, possibly all aired in the same week as a mini-series. What happens to Torchwood after that in 2009 or 2010 is as yet unknown.
This means that Torchwood will be following Doctor Who's lead: also in 2009, the usual run of Doctor Who will be replaced by five specials, although they are presumably going to be aired over a longer period of time. Doctor Who will return to its regular 13-episode schedule in 2010 under the care of Stephen Moffat.
(Who will be the companion - or the Doctor - at that time is a matter of speculation.)
This leaves only the currently-filming Sarah Jane Adventures to be slated for a regular season during the 2009 season.
Another disappointment for Torchwood fans has been suggested by Torchwood TV, which claims that the second season Torchwood DVD box set will not contain any commentaries. Perhaps they are trying to avoid the kind of controversy caused by the commentary on Doctor Who's "Last of the Time Lords," which was advertised and then not provided to the Region 1 market. However, that's quite a loss to the fans who enjoy hearing the behind-the-scenes stories as stars narrate the episodes. However, bloopers will be provided, which is something to look forward to!

WTF?! WHY?! I need my british sci-fi fix. It's better than getting canceled, of course...but still. Only 5? What's the point?! It's like getting a taste and then having it taken away!

Aww, that's a shame. I was expecting Torchwood to have a shorter season like Doctor Who but hearing it confirmed is disheartening :p. Though, I do remember a long while ago RTD mentioning that the reason for the length of Doctor Who (and presumably Torchwood too now) was to give the market a bit of time to rest and not risk over-saturation...which makes sense I suppose. *Sigh* But what will we do without our weekly Janto :P???????

Yay for SJA! It's a great show that deserves more attention. It's a pity so many are writing it off as a kid's show ...
The first season was amazing. I'm hoping the second continues the high quality - especially now that they may be able to direct more resources to it!

An excellent article about what might be a disappointing situation. Let's hope it's not so!

On the heels of this, I hear a big wig at BBC is getting a billion dollar bonus. So how can they explain this lock down on Who and TW as a lack of money?
As far as taking a break or oversaturating us, how can you get oversaturated on only 13 episodes a year? It's not like it's a daily soap opera or something. Now we only get 5, and all of those in one week??
Don't they realize they are more likely to LOSE fans that way, because if nothing is going on on the show, there's only so much fan gossiping we can do without needing new material. What's the TW magazine going to write about for the next year??
