Yes, I understand it's probably not a good idea to read and review the third issue without the second to explain what's going on. No, I don't care. This one was about Robyn Canmore and I had no intention of waiting.)
Barring having no idea of what last month's issue was supposed to be about (other than "How Yama Got His Groove Back") I thought this issue held together well. During "Hunter's Moon," we saw the aftereffects of the murder of Charles Canmore, but now we find out what happened that same night. Jason, running madly after Demona. Robyn, staying close behind but holding John's hand through the nightmare. Robyn's discovery of and confrontation with her younger brother only reconfirms what we've already known for years, that Castaway is that last, lost child, still looking for vengeance long after his father's grave has gone cold.
This issue is full of lovely moments, with echoes and shoutouts to make this fan' heart glad. The Eyrie Building is still enough to make me squee. The page showing the four hotel rooms is worth the price of admission by itself, but the use of mirrored images throughout the issue bring home the message of duality: who these people were, and who they're trying to become. There are lighter notes as well, from the names of the hockey players ("Puck's recovered by Spiner" *groan*) to the puddle of Matrix on the bed.
In the first issue, the art worked for me, but here, the choice of black and white (made for monetary reasons, and yes, of course I much prefer to have a black and white book than never to have seen this story) makes some of the panels harder to parse for people who are me, especially when so much relies on the scenes in the twinned tunnels of Paris and New York.
Overall, another fantastic issue in this story universe. I just wish I could see issue #2!
