Nozomi Entertainment/RightStuf announced on May 1, 2008, that they have licensed Aria the Animation, a series whose storylines (both anime and manga) ended just a month ago in Japan. The season one DVD box set will begin shipping on September 30th, but RightStuf.com is taking pre-orders now.
The story had its beginning in two manga series by Kozue Amano, Aria and its prequel, Aqua. The setting is a terraformed Mars in the year 2031, the planet having been renamed "Aqua" because water now covers 90% of its surface. In the city of Neo Venezia, which exactly replicates the watery Earth city, Venice, a young girl named Akari trains to be a professional gondolier, as an employee of Aria Company. She hopes one day to captain her own gondola through the city.
The manga was originally serialized in Japan in Mag Garden's "Comic Blade" magazine, and in 2005 it was announced that Aria was to be adapted into an anime series. In 2006, the anime appeared on a list of Japan's top 100 favorite series, and since Aria the Animation was created, there have been three subsequent productions: the second and third television seasons, Aria the Natural and Aria the Origination, as well as Aria the OVA ~Arietta~.
Nozomi Entertainment/RightStuf will also be bringing us the other series as they are released for the North America audience, but first we can anticipate Aria the Animation. It will be released with Japanese audio and English subtitles. While the retail price will be US $49.99, the DVD can be ordered at RightStuf for US $37.49 (plus shipping and handling). You can also check their order page for their Aria and Aqua graphic novels.
