Underground, guerilla-style
Eric Kripke recently answered fan questions about Supernatural at TVGuide.com. Among them,
he revealed a few things about season 4. Due to the writer's strike,
Supernatural will have only sixteen episodes this season. There had
been some speculation from the showrunners on the different ways season
4 might compensate for it. Sadly, Kripke revealed that The CW only
ordered the usual 22 episodes for next season.
The studio has also cut the show's budget -- which may not necessarily be bad news. As a result, Kripke says, "We'll be employing all kinds of tricks next year — the war will be smaller, more contained, underground, more guerrilla-style. I actually think it'll improve the show. Looking back over Season 3, the spectacle and size is never as interesting as the episodes that focus on the brothers."
Also, when it comes to scares, Supernatural often follows the principle that what you don't see is scarier than what you do. Against the backdrop of demons, ghosts, and scary places, it's the small moments between Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) -- such as Dean teaching Sam how to fix the Impala at the end of "Fresh Blood" -- that's the engine of the show.
"There will still be the [demon] war," Kripke adds, "but we'll be presenting it in our scruffy, angsty, Supernatural way, and we'll return to concentrating on the relationships and the characters." TV Guide also delivered the scoop that with the reduced budget, the character of Bela, the mercenary without-a-heart-of-gold, will be gone next season. At Creation Entertainment's Salute to Supernatural in Los Angeles at the end of March, Kripke talked about what he thought went wrong with the character. "She made the boys look stupid maybe once or twice too many, and she was never tied into the mythology."
Kripke told TV Guide that the show is and always has been intended to be "the saga of the Winchester clan...an epic, emotional family story. Beyond that, story elements come and go, some are introduced, and others discarded." He said the writers consider various factors in what characters and stories stay and which get cut: actor availability, their own judgment, and, he adds, "Yes, at times, the opinions of the fans." He warns that this applies only for non-core characters and story arcs and that fan response "never alters the core story and central mythology.
"
In an interview with Firefox News, producer and writer Sera Gamble indicated that Ellen Harvelle (Samantha Ferris) would be returning for the season finale. However, it seems negotiations fell through, as the actress subsequently reported on her blog, so fans probably won't see more of Ellen anytime soon. The show has a mixed track record with its supporting characters. At the Creation Convention, Eric Kripke also mentioned Jo Harvelle, Ellen's daughter, whose character, like Bela, didn't play out the way they'd hoped. Ava, Andy, Jake, and Lily, Sam's fellow psychic-kids, were all killed in season two's finale "All Hell Breaks Loose." Ellen and Jo happily haven't been killed off, they have simply faded from the show, and haven't been mentioned. The quirky computer genius Ash died when the Roadhouse burned down. Agent Henriksen, a very popular character, fell victim to the demon Lilith at the end of "Jus in Belo."
Ruby the demon for the moment seems to have some staying power -- at Creation, Eric Kripke joked "if you don't like Ruby, tough." The reliable, caustic, and much beloved Bobby (Jim Beaver) also seems to be sticking around as far as we know.
So, Supernatural fans, are you glad that the budget cuts will lead to a return to a tighter focus on the brother interaction? It's true the show is best when it's about Sam and Dean. However, supporting characters add a new perspective on the Winchesters, and can be fun characters in their own right (I love Sam and Dean, but I confess, I have a weakness for the supporting characters). There are some it seems hard to imagine Supernatural without.
Who would you like to see return? Anyone you think should stay or the show should do more with, even while the main focus next season stays on the brothers?
Samantha Ferris had this to say in tribute to Ellen: "She is unlike any character I have played and I am proud of her. She was tough love, fiercely loving, and loyal to the death. I don't think that more Ellen's out there would be a bad thing. Someone that I could throw a beer back with. I loved the cast and crew, the producers and writers, and my connection to all of them...Thank you for digging her and understanding her as much as I did."

I actually like the idea of a contained war. Jus In Bello was pretty cool, albeit they went overboard with the Henrickson talk and then end up killing him off, which just makes the talks pointless.
I'm happy about Bela leaving, and I like the sound of season 4.
Season 3 has been the weakest season but it was still extremely enjoyable. More scares, more focus on the brothers, darker lighting, and more classic rock are needed to make Season 4 the best season , I think.
And I hate to sound like a prick, but less episodes written by Ben Edlund would be great. He's not that funny. Especially when you've got Carver on the Supernatural team who wrote the hilarious Mystery Spot. More Carver, less Edlund. :)

I would love to see Ellen return. I just adore her. And of course Bobby has to stay. He's an integral part of the storyline and like a substitute father for hte boys. All else is up for grabs of course. Might be an idea to focus a little on the backstory (like John and Mary) if only to give the boys some time off now and again. They work so hard to make this a great show for us, they deserve a little downtime now and again.

I actually like the episodes where the mystery is solved over the course over an arc of episodes. I think one of the strongest parts of the show has been the demon war and how we are fed small bits of information and revolations. I also really liked the character Bella in particular the episode where her and Dean attented the ball so I hope she returns.

Per Kripke"the saga of the Winchester clan...an epic, emotional family story."
If only. A couple of seasons back, Kripke, you said it was always about the brothers, then this season you turned it all about Sam, and I don't see that changing, sadly. It would have been nice to have it about both, but, oh well for us Dean girls.
Anyway, yeah, keeping it about Dean and Sam and at a smaller war scale would be great. The big draw of the show was the brother, so the budget crisis did work for us there. I hope we still get the good classic rock also.

this show is awesome and i would love to see ellen ash and jo return even for a second lol but ye the only things things that i didnt like about season 3 have the LACK of music and the BRIGHT colour/ lighting i enjoy the DARK GRAINY colour/lighting, the dark colour suits this show PERFECTLY
if these 2 things would change the show would be at its aboslute best i think
BTW I HATE THE CW 4 NOT EXTENDING THE SEASON

i think supernatural rocks but sometimes miss the objective of dead characters, bella would make a brilliant deamon been the bitch she was, also the dead storyline of sam and deans mother and sams girlfriend should be introduced back into a storyline, the purpose of why they died(gifted kids) could still have a twist, idea, hell's angels(not the crazed bikers)would like to see season 4 throw in something no one would suspect, maybe a family member no one knew about with connections to the underworld(are they good or bad scenario)but totaly agree lets get back to basics more sam and dean moments in a darker envirnoment, ps please don't keep dean in chains too long..Keep up the good work

I can't understand why girls who love Dean/Jensen so much always complain about not getting enough of Dean Winchester? If you go to Super Wicki they have a list of which episodes are Dean heavy and which episodes are Sam heavy...Dean wins like by 2 eppies more. He is also infront of the 2 SPN DVD's and the impala is he's....poor Sammy doesn't have much...except the fact that everyone around him dies?

Basically,
regardless i love show so much long brothers are on screen doing there thing i'm fine. If i want to see epic battle i'll watch the movie gladiator.
Prediction: Next season starts with a recap, then skips 3 months ahead showing sam slowly turn darker and darker trying to survive and deal (like mystery spot). Then he gets into trouble, and dean saves him ending the episode.
How dean save him? well going to assume ammy brings DEan back but it takes time. I believe it represents some shamanistic thing which it chooses it's wearer through destiny (sam gave it to him instead of his dad) and person dies and comes back to life even stronger.
Hence dean being back into a 1 piece body with no cuts.
or something like that.
One thing always confused me is you go to hell you become demon after time. There dad sold his soul for dean goes to hell but doesn't come back a demon but a ghost then vanishes did he somehow go to heaven?

I love this show. Finally a great nonreality show that you can really get into. CW.. PLEASE don't take it off the air. With everything I have been reading there is a HUGE following. Sam and Dean are great....the whole cast is awesome! Although I really wish somehow their father could come back. I mean since there is so much help for the demons coming from below why not some coming from above? Like the other person said... maybe their mom or Jessica trying to help also. As for Dean dying .. OH NO WAY! That would ruin the show. He has to fight his way back and be by Sam's side helping him fight evil. Way to go on a GREAT show. Can't wait till thursday nights every week!

I'm very glad to hear that there will be a season 4, and I am pleased that the budget will be cut. Season 1 was the best series in my opinion, because it had that 'classic, urban myth' type feel to it. Plus it included a lot of emotional family issues which the boys were struggling with. Whilst seasons 2 and 3 have also dealt with the family side of things, I think that the plot lines of the show have expanded perhaps a teeny bit too much. I really love the idea of a more contained war. I'm one of the few fans that actually enjoyed watching Bela and Jo, so I'm disappointed that we won't be seeing them again. It's good that Ruby's staying though. I love how they're developing her character. Although I hope they don't forget that the show is primarily about Dean and Sam! Please please please let them save Dean! We have been left with one heck of a cliffhanger, and I for one really would love a happy ending. This means that whenever the show decides to end/gets taken off the air, that both Sam and Dean are alive, well and haven't turned evil! Please?
This show has a little bit of everything and there's nothing else like it on tv. Roll on season4; can't wait!

Thanks for the show,it's truly entertaining. I'd like to see Ellen and Jo back.. I wouldn't be so harsh on them.. there's a lot of room to develop these characters... they're of the same breed as Winchesters.. they're their family as Bobby, family doesn't end with blood.

I love the show but I really thought that you guys would have tied Bella back into the story line with her history revieled as a distant cousin of his mothers side of the family and make it a extended family thing I mean she is smart and she does seem like an older sister always tricking her little brothers. As for Ellen's daughter she was a little to kiddy for the story line, then again she's been gone for a while maybe you can bring her back all grown up with a little attitude and some type of skill she would make a good addition to the team as well. I love Ruby's character right on, there's so much to add onto her! What about the boys mom? I definitley agree it does need to focus more on the main story line sometimes I'll look at an episode and be dissapointed because the episode didn't reveal anything or they really didn't learn anything they just solved a mission. I think it's vital that every episode reveals something even if it's just something small from the past. Also somehow we need to get some more good demons from hell side fighting on the boys side. Maybe there father's character can be ressurrected along with deans when you guys actually figure out how he escapes hell..... One thing is for sure though I think a look into hell and all the evil things they put away would be a great look for the show. I mean Dean is dead and it's about time he faces his demons right? Well I really love the show and the future shows so much promise I really love the way you guys think and I can't wait to see what's next so keep up the good work!

I am thrilled to see Katie Cassidy returning for season 4. She has really developed her charachter as we see in the final episode. Katie brings the most to the sho (along with Bobby) other than our BOYS! That's a nice group to focus on. Acting wise, I'd chose Katie's accomplishments in the series over Bobby's....she has improved 500% and I LOVE her!

JENSEN ACKLES IS NOT LEAVING THE SHOW KRIPKE WAS MAKING A JOKE
so anyway i am excited about the upcoming season, if they where to bring a character back apart from JOHN WINCHESTER i would like to possibly see JO comeback as a more experienced hunter and someone that is older and wiser to what she was a young girl who was quite annoying and trying to do something that she sucked at, ellen and ash are other great characters but other than thm no body else. i would just like to add that even though season 3 had a few very memorable episodes the season its self had more bad than good episodes i felt like the season was a little off i hope season 4 can be a bit more like the first 2 seasons
I only wish that season 3 had been 22 episodes rather than 16

I think supernatural is great and love Dean, Sam and John. I hope they do not damage the relationship between Dean and Sam that would suck. I would love to see John (dad) come back he was awesome , maybe some flashbacks to their childhood where he teaches the boys and protects and loves them . I love the 'do anything for each other ' vibe but with an undercurrent of discipline and a strict upbringing with Dad mmnnnnnnnn so sexy. I also like the discipline that dean has too with sam. I think bobby is great too but don't want him to take over the dad role, john was too good, he should come back and save dean and sam at some point in future episodes. Love the singing bits and banter between the boys too.
The only episode i have not liked was ghostfacers, not enough of the boys and i did not really like jo, she got dean into shit because she was a spoiled brat and i haed the implication that dad got her father killed, crap crap.
so thats what i think, keep up the good work writers, so awesome!!

I love the supporting characters. I love Bobby, Ellen and Joe. I want them all to stay. I want for story lines w/ Ellen and Joe. I also liked Bella who i hear is gone. she definetly was a #itch but she kept it interesting. Of course Sam and Dean are the bombs but they need more than each other sometimes. I love someone breaking Dean's chops like Bela or Joe.

I like that they are going back to the focus on Dean and Sam, thats where the heart is. Thats what makes the show.
But i would love Bobby, Ruby, Ellen and Jo to stay, i dont understand them saying the Jo character went wrong, i loved her and she had great chemistry with Dean. I really want them to hook up once Deans out of hell. I
I would also like Sam and Ruby to hook up. Maybe have him go to the "dark side" with her and have Dean fight to get him back on the right path.
Im not sad to see Bela go, what a pain in the ass, her hot looks and accent just didnt make up for the fact, that she was a bitch.

What I would like to know is why in the end of season 2 when yellow eyes shows Sam the scene where his mother was killed, Mary says "you" to the demon, as though she recognizes him. If this was explained in season 4, it would be awesome. Next season sounds really good. VERY excited

I reckon the third season was alot better than people give it credit for. The shoe has mostly focused more so on sam than dean and the fact that dean was the one in danger for once gave the show a different focus, which was smart because there was no more psychics to concentrate on. Also having a good demon is a cool idea because it gives sam and dean some more reasons to question what they fight like with the good vampires in season 2. I wanna see more about sam and deans mum in season 4 with some explination of her ties to the yellow eyed demon. More of ruby would be cool with some more demon killing weapons. And also when Dean returns from hell lets not have him changed too much. yeah maybe have him more powerful but not completely changed because he keeps the show light hearted and funny. Either way erik kripke rocks and so does this show please keep up the good work there's not enough shows with this level of quality anymore. Really looking forward to season 4.

So this is the best show ever. Sam And Dean's characters are so well written and so is each episode. I personally think that bobby should stay on the show and help sam save dean since he is the only family he has now. BUT DEAN HAS TO COME BACK. Or it would ruin the show completely. Both characters have such good chemistry together, it would be sad to be it end.
PS: I love the show, love the actors (mega sexy), and love the writters. PLEASE NEVER GO OFF THE AIR or i will die. haha

Thanks to Eric Kripke and others who make this a wonderful show.
Would love to see John W return to the show. Maybe flashbacks of Dean in hell showing us the Winchester "hunters" as the boys grow up. Would like to see why "yellow eyes" picked Sam instead of Dean, and his connection to the boy's mom. Also, would love to see Ruby as a witch before she went to hell. Maybe she could have made and put a spell on the amulet that Sam gave to Dean for Christmas when they were young. Maybe that same necklace that he has been wearing could link Ruby to yellow eyes to the mom then to the boys??? Maybe they could use that amulet's power to locate him in hell??
Do not mind losing Bella or Jo, however I would like to see Ash (or another computer expert) return to the story. Love Ruby and John Winchester characters. Thank you. hm

Im a forever fan of the show. I think more focus on the brothers is going to be the best thing thats happened to supernatural. hapy that bobby is sticking around and bela is gone wish ruby to to be gone too, never liked her. Wish for more depth in the story behind the family too. like how did the boys mother know yellow eyes. and what happened to the father after he climbed out of hell. and more questions, guess i follow too close to the story, but the more detail the better it is. gonna be great to see that the show is gonna be more about the brothers. CANT WAIT!!!!

I didn't realize nobody liked Bella until I read this article... I freakin' LOVED Bela. It took me nearly all season to warm to Ruby, but she's aight. Smaller, darker, brotherly focused all sound good, but I will miss Bela and Henrickson, who I don't think they should have killed. Maybe he escaped but allowed people to believe he was dead so he could fall off the grid and fight the big bad. That's my version of the story anyway. Love Sam, love love love Dean, and I don't know who's complaining that there isn't enough Dean, I think the screen time is pretty equal. I'd like to see more of Sam's supposed powers, though. And I hope they don't spend much time in hell.

I was really impressed with Bela's backstory, and the motivation for her family slaughter was a lot more adult than I expected it to be. They did a damn good job with the second last episode, "Time Is On My Side", because 1) you saw a dude's heart get surgically removed while he was concsious.
2) You can see just how far Sam goes to save his brother.
I just hope that he didn't do a deal for Dean, not because I don't want to see Sam in hell, but because it would become an overused plot device. And a neverending one. Dean better have some sort of power in Season 4, just a hint of demon in him. Slightly blackened eyes would be mad.

But anyway ive never missed an episode, its my favorite show, and i cant wait for the 4th season!!

I would really really love to see Ruby come back in season four. It would also be great if Katie Cassidy could play her again. She was excellent as Ruby.

I MUST ADMIT THAT @ FIRST I DIDN'T WALK THE SHOW MUCH. I HAD SO MANY OTHER FAVORITES ON THE CW. HOWEVER, I BOUGHT THE 1ST AND 2ND SEASON TO SUPERNATURAL, AND I HAVE TO SAY I LOVE THE SHOW. THE BROTHERS ARE EXTREMELY, INTENSE, INTERESTING, AND FUNNY IN THEIR OWN RIGHT...I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT I RELATE TO BOTH CHARACTERS. SAM, IS SWEET/MODEST/SMART AND RESPECTFUL...DEAN, ON THE OTHER HAND, IS FIERCE/RUTHLESS/WITTY AND SHARP..BETWEEN THE TWO OF THEM, I'M PROBABLY MOST LIKE DEAN...I SINCERELY HOPE THAT THE SHOW LAST AS LONG AS BEVERLY HILLS 90210...LOL!!!!!

I love Supernatural, Dean and Sam Winchester are the best characters of the entire CW channel. Supernatural will be one of the greats like Buffy The Vampir Slayer, Angel, and Charmed was to the WB. Dean Winchester is a great character, he has many depths, not only just the tough hot body and face in a leather jacket, he's kind to his brother and stong with his emotions. Sam is fantastic as well, he's sweet yet he has a darker edge to him as well. He is smart and knows more than he let Dean believes. They work well as brothers and Jensen and Jared have a similar dark, handsome look that make it believable. Supernatural should be twice as long as Smallville is. Because in honest opinion, it is twice as good.

I think that season four will be as enjoyable and focused as the other three though the third season was slower and not as centered on Dean and Sam I think it was still a very strong and exiting as the other two.
There was , at times, a slightly to tearful aproach to season three though I beleive seeing the sensitve side of both boys was a needed quality in the Supernatural saga.
Let us hope Jensen and Jared are back in full swig for the fourth series, because all Hell knows it wouldn't be Supernatural without the two boys.
Can't wait for the fourth series.
Does anyone know when it is arriving here in the UK?

I have been hooked on Supernatural ever since the first time I watched Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki.
The two actors energys are some fitting that it was a must see all through the three seasons so far.
It has been a joy watching the brothers face a new or old foe/friend every week and I am deeply looking foward to the return of this brilliant series.
I do hope though that Supernatural doesn't end with all the charecters dying because just seeing a few die was hard enough.
When I watched Sam and Dean die their seperate deaths I had tears streaming down my face.
I think the writers and Actors put so much emotion into Supernatural, You can feel the tragegy from the Brothers point of view and from the supporting actors/actresses.
I can not wait for the fourth season because I know from expirence of the other three that it will be just as action packed and suspense filled as any of the others.
Good Luck to all the writers and actors/actresses.

I think season four has started off pretty well. I love the whole angel thing, I think them adding it was unexpected. As for the supporting cast I think they should keep bobby and bring back Jo I loved her character. um it would also be cool to bring in some kind of new family member. Maybe they could have a long lost sister or something like that.

I <3 SUPERNATURAL.
It is my fkn favourite show. Its shit in Australia because in takes ages and ages for the new seasons to come out. America is so lucky! Theres a website though, called Project TV, which lets you watch all tv shows and movies that have been released in any part of the world. So I keep up with Supernatural even when its not on where I live. I like the idea of Ruby coming back & the idea of Bela leaving. All those times the boys saved her life and she is still an ungrateful bitch. Its good she got killed off by the crossroads demon. I also like the new angel of the show Castielle and someone really needs to sort out Sam's 'dark', side or whatever. In the lastest aired eppisode, Castielle takes Dean back in time which is good because now we finally know everything about John & Mary. We know how Mary knew Azazel (yellow eyed demon). We know why the demon came after Sam in the first place, because of Mary's deal and we know that the demon actually had better plans then the demon army ... oh and we know where Lucifer comes into it too XD Soz I know I wrote a lot my I just fkn love the show and read to much into it lol.
Eric Kripke. You Legend!

I'm glad to see the focus staying with the brothers - I though the first two series were excellent, but that series three wandered away from the point - with too much focus on other characters. Bobby and Ruby are my favourite supports, so glad there sound like there is more work for them to do.
