Less than a week after discussing hiring for Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles (T:tSCC), Fox confirmed to hollywoodreporter.com that not only will they be renewing T:tSCC, it'll be back in the fall.
On 4/21, Fox made an official 13-episode order. However, according to Fox Entertainment President, Kevin Reilly, T:tSCC will probably be moved off of Mondays at 9, which thankfully will take it out of sci-fi genre watching competition with "Heroes."
If the show does well, Reilly suggested that T:tSCC would be in the fast lane to get an early order for an additional nine episodes. This makes a certain amount of sense as Terminator 4 will be released in May of 2009 and having a t.v. show about the same franchise would be advertising bliss.
The date chosen to make the announcement does make me wonder if there's a fan lurking somewhere in the Fox Marketing department, since as the obsessively note taking fan may have noticed, Cameron told us in the pilot that Skynet will fire up on 4/19 in 2011 and then take its leisurely time to destroy the world on 4/21. Now that we know we'll get a second season, we'll have to wait and see if renewing the show on 4/21/08 will cause or prevent the world's destruction in a fourth season.
Sarah Connor had been considered a strong contender for renewal. After an initial ratings free fall from the pilot episode, which ran after football, T:tSCC consistently was in the top 5 for the 18-49 demographic, within the top ten shows for Fox, and consistently appeared in the top ten DVR shows. Now if Warner Brothers will release a DVD, fans can get to the serious business of lending it out in the campaign for S3.
It’s the fandom way for dealing with the apocalypse.
