This past weekend, FUNimation chose New York Comic Con during which to reveal that it is bringing Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles to Blu-ray disc, in cooperation with the series originator, Harmony Gold.
The Robotech series has had many incarnations since its inception in the early 1980s, and the feature length animated Shadow Chronicles film was begun in 2005 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first series. Harmony Gold showed it at several film festivals in 2006, and then FUNimation licensed and released it early in 2007.
Tommy Yune, the director of the film, describes how fortuitous it was that it was produced in high definition, since "the capabilities of Blu-ray technology will finally allow our fans to enjoy the film with that level of resolution in the comfort of their own homes." FUNimation describes the animation as taking a "generational leap into the future through the technological marriage of CG graphics beautifully composited with vibrant anime characters."
The original video is now augmented with a 5.1 digital surround sound mix, while the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra performs the musical score.
The storyline of the film continues from, and overlaps with, the last few episodes of the original television series, and brings back several favorite characters. In addition, the DVD features "Birth of a Sequel: The Making of the Shadow Chronicles," as well as previously deleted scenes, directors commentary, and other additional segments.
This highlight of the long-running Robotech saga will be available for sale on September 2, 2008, for the suggested retail price of US $39.98.
