Every so often, you stumble across a piece of fanfiction that works entirely on its own as a piece of solid science fiction, outside of the context of its home universe. Then you squee, because you win at fanfic.
"Living History" is a story about stories. A mysterious alien crash lands on Earth and is rescued by Sarah Jane Smith. It's a basic plot for an SJA romp, but it's also so much more. The story unfolds gently, revolving around time and memory, and the things that draw people together. Spoilers up through the end of S1 Sarah Jane Adventures.
An excerpt:
Out of the sky he fell, the traveler with no name. Into the mist he fell, lost and alone, forgotten. He looked up at unfamiliar stars and with the wind and the grass sang pity for his race.
The gods heard his cry and found mercy for him. They sent him an angel, a teller of histories, an alien woman with kind voice and gentle ways, to share the gift of memory.
