BBC has published a press release about the success of the new iplayer service, which permits watching streaming video over the Internet or download-on-demand of particular BBC shows. Episodes are available for a short period (usually around a week) after initial airing to British viewers. Doctor Who and Torchwood have been particularly popular shows on the service, with the Who Christmas special and the two episodes of the new season of Torchwood in the top 10 accessed shows.
For classic-era Doctor Who fans, Big Finish has started a download service and podcast.
The podcast provides interviews and advertisements of upcoming features, while the download service, premiered with an original production of Phantom of the Opera, has been expanded to cover the usual lines, including the Doctor Who monthly releases. This is proving particularly popular in America; Jason Haigh-Ellery announced at the Outpost Gallifrey convention this last weekend that 40% of the downloaders were American, who had made up only a fraction of the people who have subscribed to the CD service.
To download Big Finish audios, go to the newly redesigned main page and sign in. Members of current CD subscriptions will be able to download for free immediately while they wait for their CDs to arrive; in order to take advantage of that feature, they must contact Big Finish and notify them of the current subscription so that the webmaster can connect the online and offline accounts.
Big Finish also announced at the convention that there will be a third season of Eighth Doctor/Lucie audios launched in 2009.
