You may have successfully killed one of comics' greatest romances in one fell swoop. No, I don't mean Black Canary and Green Arrow. On that front, I couldn't possibly be happier. Justin Hartley and Alaina Huffman have great chemistry. Watching them confront Lex was a blast. I look forward to seeing them in action again.

Siren is a good episode. It hit all the marks and it almost hit them all square on target. With Green Arrow and Black Canary, their aim was 100% effective. With some other things, they need a little more practice.

Let me say up front, all the actors brought their A-games, but I especially want to highlight Erica Durance here. She did a great job in this episode and can't be faulted for some missteps with storyline.Missteps which were present practically from go. That said, I wasn't particularly bothered about the sniping between Lois and Dinah. In fact, I thought it made sense. Sleeping with the editor is not going to earn Lois any friends at the Planet. For the foreseeable future, she'll be the paper's very own scarlet woman. If all she gets is a few chilly comments in an elevator, Lois should probably consider herself lucky. Some workplaces I've seen, it's not nearly that friendly.

Which isn't to say that's what Smallville had in mind, but it at least made sense. Not like Lois's short term memory problem. Wasn't her ex-boyfriend shot to death last week? There was a surprising lack of reaction to that in the episode period, actually. The editor of the Daily Planet is murdered in the company of a famous industralist and no one raises an eyebrow? Yes, it looked a mugging, but still, it should generate some impact. Did Metropolis and Bludhaven swap places when I wasn't looking?

I'm hoping there's a better explanation for this in an upcoming episode, but I'm not holding my breath. Follow-through has never been this show's strong point.

While we're on the subject, it's no secret that Smallville has always been fond of dramatic irony. They love to wink at the audience with sly digs about the characters' futures. Clark being afraid of heights comes to mind.

In the past, it's been one of their more endearing habits. It wasn't in Siren.

Yes, obviously Lois Lane and Oliver Queen were never meant to be. We've read the comics; we know how the stories go, so what was up with that good-bye speech? In one short scene they effectively gave us a Lois Lane who will never be able to accept Superman's life. They may have been going for another moment of ironic foreshadowing where we all snicker, but this was the wrong moment to do that. It came across not so much as a statement of who Lois is in the moment, but who Lois is on a fundamental level that isn't so easily changed. In an episode so heavily steeped in the DCU mythos, this was a huge misstep.

I have no doubt they'll happily backtrack on that later on, but it's going to bug me for a while. I can't say the same for Lana and Clark's flirtation with genuine emotional interaction. I have been waiting for a scene like the Isis confrontation practically since day one.

It was practically perfect. The writing was, unsurprisingly, iffy, but the actors did a stellar job with it anyway. The desperation and self-loathing that Lana's obviously battling with really came through in Kristin's eyes and Tom did a wonderful job juggling Clark's hurt, his betrayal, and his frustration with Lana's continued deceptions.

It's a scene that was long overdue coming. I wasn't very fond with his backtracking later in the episode, but I'm just happy we got that confrontation in the first place.

Now that I have that out of the way, I can embrace the awesome of this episode. Alaina Huffman more than delivered as Dinah Lance. She took a fairly cheesy costume – okay, a fairly cheesy mask – and completely owned that character. From the moment she walked on screen to the moment she left it, she was Black Canary and I loved every second of it.

Might I say that it's dizzyingly good to see a woman join the fledgling JLA's ranks? And not only one, we got two? I'm sure I'm not the only woman who was beginning to grow impatient on that front. Not that I don't love the boys, I do, but with Chloe and Dinah officially connected to the League, I am breathing a lot easier.

Okay, so maybe I'm also hoping Kara will get thrown into the mix and we'll see a new and improved League in action.

Come on, Smallville, it would be beautiful!
