Merlin Missy has been active in online fandom since 1994. She likes fanfics with plots and happy endings. I kid you not, gentle readers. When I first touched this lovely little book, I started giggling, and I think I scared my friendly neighborhood comic store guy. I was ready to love this book from the moment I set eyes on the cover.
I totally still do. As my fellow manic Gargoyles fans can attest, we've been waiting to see this particular book ever since the leica reel first debuted back at Gathering '97. Back then, we still held out hope for the 'toon, of course, but comics let you go places cartoons can't, and I'm eager to see how far that goes in this case. ("Insertion" jokes are in fact a good start.)
Dingo and Hunter's first meeting, out by the rock, has become my very favorite "how they met" story, even surpassing "and then she fell off the building." (What? So I'm the only person in the fandom who 'ships Hunter/Dingo. That means this book of squee is all for me. Hah! *wins at fandom*) The Shaman returns, and gangs up against Dingo with Matrix in convincing him to join the team. There are two big fights, also an explosion, and we haven't even gotten to "Mommy!" yet.
The book is in black and white, which was intended to keep costs down but plays well with the characters and makes Karine Charlebois' pencils look more artistic than even the work on the main book. I like it. Greg Weisman is getting to tell another story he's wanted to for ages, and one that will tie up some major loose ends from the end of the series. The Redemption Squad idea sounds cheesy, but we know if anyone can pull it off well, it's this team, and after it's done, there are more miniseries to follow.
Next time, Yama!
