View all articles by Phyl GoodIt’s been a busy week for Bandai Visual USA, announcing three different releases for the spring of this year. Two of the shows are currently airing in Japan, while the third is a remastered OVA (original video animation) series.
The OVA, Yukikaze, will be released on April 8, in a Blu-Ray Disc Box Set that includes deluxe bonus features and footage never shown before. Produced by Gonzo, the series has been digitally remastered in High Definition, which is especially fitting and exciting for this particular series, since it’s known for its stunning aerial animation. The show tells the story of Rei Fukai and his tactical reconnaissance plane, Yukikaze, fighting the alien force known as JAM, so you can just imagine what their encounters will look like in High Def.
The discs come with the usual features, such as optional Japanese and English subtitles, while bonus features include the 6-minute Yukikaze Experimental movie, another segment entitled “Aircrafts in Yukikaze from pilots’ eyes,” and a 20-page full color Special Air Force Flight Manual.
Each of the other two releases, Shigofumi: Letters from the Departed, and True Tears, will see the first of their seven discs released almost simultaneously on DVD this coming May. This will be only two months after their release in Japan and, surprisingly, a mere five months after the original airing.
Shigofumi (release date May 13), produced by Tatsuo Sato and Ichiro Okouchi, with character design by Kouhaku Kuroboshi, tells the tale of mail carrier Fumika, who delivers a letter to Asuna from her father – a letter written after his death! True Tears (date May 27), directed by Junji Nishimura, follows the story of picture book author Shinichiro Nakagami as he meets Noe Isurugi, the girl who has lost the ability to cry.
Bandai Visual has already given us lots to look forward to, and we’re only one month into 2008. Who knows what other goodies they have in store for us this year?
